Review ~ Hellblazer review pt. 2

Hellblazer volume 2 Feast of Friends

Who? Who are the major players and minor players?
Major players as of now:
Constantine
Papa Midnight
Mnemoth (hunger demon)
Emma (dead girlfriend who is now a ghost)

Minor players as of now:
Lester
a crap ton of ghost that haunt Constantine the night before he sacrifices Lester
A couple of overweight zombies

What? What is this story all about?
A demon is trapped in the body of a boy and a stupid man releases it into a bottle. Then it escapes and plagues the man and anyone who gets in its way. Feeding off of anger, fear, and of course food. Killing all it inhabits as they eat themselves to death.

When?
a few hours since we've landed in USA by the time we end this volume it has been a 2 days

Where? Does it take place.
United States

Why?
The demon is lose on the city and the citizens are turning on each other devouring everything. It has to be stopped before it takes over completely.

and How?
an exorcism that doesn't backfire

Summary thus far in vol. 2:
So we left off with Papa Midnight agreeing to help Constantine since Constantine was too weak to handle the demon on his own. In the hotel Constantine is haunted by a bunch of ghost the night before the big exorcism. The best I can tell is they are or rather were old friends of his that died in battle AKA exorcisms gone wrong. The Demon continues to grow throughout the night feeding off of people's desires and some really gross flesh eating UGH. Needless to say old Lester has to be the one that the demon goes in since he's the bloody idiot that let it out. Of course Constantine feels guilty about it and well there are ghost of Christmas' past involved and whatnot so that doesn't help with the guilt. It ends with a new story line and Lester dead with Constantine hungover and heading back over the pond.

Favorite Lines from vol. 2:
I have no words left. I'm shattered, a dead-man, a zombie, re-animated by a cold hand wound deep in my gut.
Gambling's a funny business kids, sometimes you lose!
Moring. Nice day for the race. What race? Hah. The Human Race. Sucker

FINAL GRADES:
DRAWINGS: B+ I think I am getting use to the newpaper quality of the drawings b/c they seemed to flow better. The use of color and lack of made the read interesting.
STORY LINE: B It wrapped it up nicely all the questions are tied up the only thing I had a problem with was the abrupt switch in story  line for the next volume. It didn't really fit in with this one and seemed very sudden.
CHARACTERS: A All the characters appeared to stay in character and did what I expected. I found myself feeling bad for Lester and Constantine. It was clearly apparent how the sacrifice made him feel and the guilt it added to him.

OVERALL GRADE: B+

Review ~ Hellblazer review pt. 1

Hellblazer volume 1 Hunger

Who? Who are the major players and minor players?
Major players as of now:
Constantine
Papa Midnight
Mnemoth (hunger demon)

Minor players as of now:
Lester
Emma (dead girlfriend who is now a ghost)
Shaman in Africa
Boy who carried Demon

What? What is this story all about?
A demon is trapped in the body of a boy and a stupid man releases it into a bottle. Then it escapes and plagues the man and anyone who gets in its way. Feeding off of anger, fear, and of course food. Killing all it inhabits as they eat themselves to death.

When?
Not sure there is a timeline

Where? Does it take place.
United States
Then home to England (from what I gathered)
Then off to Africa (Sudan)
Then back to the Good US of A

Why?
Entertainment LOL
No I'm not sure why the demon was released other then it called to Lester who couldn't help himself.

and How?
through an exorcism that backfires

Summary thus far in vol. 1:
Start off with John coming home from I believe the US he discovers a very high "friend Lester" and lots and lots of bugs. This journey takes him to Africa back the US in hopes of finding out how to defeat the Mnemoth the hunger demon. Along the way he runs into his ghost of a girlfriend Emma who was killed by a demon. After realizing he is not strong enough to defeat the demon he calls on the help of Papa Midnight whom from what I can tell is a zombie maker ;)

Favorite Lines from vol. 1:
Back in the flat, I'm Billy the Kid and Genghis Khan rolled into one. This is it, wildlife Armageddon for insects.
Why does primitive magic always hurt?
As the sun wobbles down onto the horizon, spilling its blood across the plain like a wounded animal

FINAL GRADES:
DRAWINGS: B they are rough giving almost a newspaper feel to them but lots of color and grit which fits the story line
STORY LINE: B interesting enough that I would've bought the next volume just to see if they can contain this particular demon. Didn't care for the bug part of it, but eh when one watches Supernatural you tend to get over things like that.
CHARACTERS: A  I thought all the characters were well fleshed out and while I still have questions about the minor characters I am not questioning them so much that I can't sleep. I do want to know more about Papa Midnight and I am curious about Emma but I am confident this will all come to light eventually
OVERALL GRADE: B+ I do recommend the first volume and think it has been worth my money so far.

Review ~ Goul Goblin by Jim Butcher

Ghoul Goblin by Jim Butcher
Published: 12/3/2013
Pages:152 page
Purchased: ARC given by Netgalley
Ebook

Goodreads Summary:
Harry Dresden, a Chicago private investigator and wizard, heads to a small, isolated Missouri town terrorized by Nevernever monsters. The singularly unfortunate Talbot family has suffered a curse that has decimated their number for generations, and only our hero can save them... that is, if he can survive hostile lawmen, the dark secrets of townsfolk, an ancient guardian spirit, and two deadly carnivores! Can Dresden cleanse the Talbot bloodline of its curse without a blood sacrifice of his own?

My Thoughts:

First let me start off by telling you I am a HUGE Harry Dresden fan. I have read every book that Mr. Butcher has put out on this character, including but not limited to his graphic novels. This is an excellent story. The graphics were great, I felt like I really got a feel for the characters. Harry was true to Harry and it took a minute to realize this story takes place sometime after the second book not the current 13th book we are on. So in that sense Harry did run true to his character at that time. And while I personally don't think that Harry has changed all that much he has by the time we get the latest release 11 books later. So having the book take place so far back was a slight adjustment, but still nice to see the old Harry out to play. The plot was quick and to the point. I saw one of the twist coming, but I admit no the other. I enjoyed this story and would have loved to see more of it. Alas it wasn't long enough to be a full novel. I highly recommend this to anyone who is a fan of the series or would like to start the series.

Runaways pt. 2

Yep you guessed it I finally was able to catch up on this fantastic series and can I just say HOLY MOSES I didn't see that one coming!

Okay so I left off when the kids running away after attacking their parents when they found out they were super villains. Well apparently one of them was a mole b/c they left a note and would leave hints and clues as to where they were. We also learn up to issue 18 that there is this whole cult element, captain American makes a guess appearance, and who the FREAKING mole is and can I just say WOW not the one I thought.

We see how the parents formed the Pride group, why they did it and actually the reason why their parents joined an evil force attempting to take over the world. Or rather will destroy the world after giving them all 25 years of powers to help them weed out anyone that stands in the way. The kids learn that their parents made a pact to save them by each having one child and then that child would take their places after the world was destroyed.

Love the story idea love the twist wasn't sure who the mole was, but once it was explained I got it. Loved how the saga ended although I thought having Captain America make a guest appearance was pretty awesome (he's my favorite comic book hero). I love how the kids banned together and continued to learn their powers and how to fight with them. Even at the end when they learned one of them had betrayed the group they still worked together and remained in contact.

The graphics are good, the story line is great I felt like I could really connect with all the characters and I loved learning about them and how their powers worked as they learned about it. For sure this is one series that I HIGHLY recommend to any and all that want a new graphic novel.

Review ~ Runaways pt. 1

So I just started a new graphic novel series (new to me not new out) called Runaways. Basically its a group of teenagers that discover their parents are super villains and part of an organization called The Pride. They have just discovered that some of them have powers, a dinosaur, and may not be from this planet. Now it's the runaways verses the parents and I am dying to know who is going to win this battle

Rough outline for you:

Alex Wilder: Mastermind from what I can determine kind of reminds me of Professor X without the cool powers. We will have to see how he develops. He doesn't take a new name b/c he wants to redeem the name his parents have corrupted.

Gertrude Yorkes: who has the coolest pet ever a raptor whom she calls Old Lace and then changes her name to Arsenic. From what I can tell she doesn't have any cool powers either other than the ability to communicate with her pet.

Karolina Dean: She is a freaking alien and looks like a rainbow, but apparently that comes with powers that her mother also possesses. She changes her name to Lucy in the Sky no idea why but she likes it so whatever. Her parents besides being aliens also appear to be hippies

Chase Stein: Who starts off as an abused kid apparently has parents who remind me of Dr. Horrible on cooler crap they invent like xray goggles and gloves that shoot fire out of them! Chase wants to be called Neo from the Matrix and everyone is against it, but we will have to wait until the next book to let us know if he is able to keep it. Since Arsenic wants  his name to be talkback

Molly Hayes: who happens to be the youngest and her parents are Jane Grey and well a male version of that. She ends up possessing those gifts plus a lot of strength that I didn't see coming until she used it on a person. Oh and they call her Bruiser but she wanted to be Princess Powerful LOL keep in mind she's 12

Nico Minoru: is the last of the group and apparently a witch that had a staff buried in her by her mother in one of the fight scenes that came out when she needed it the most during another fight scene so that was pretty bad assery. Oh Nico which I happen to like that name better then the one she chooses goes by Sister Grimm... seriously?!?

So basically now we have the kids grouped up in a cave hiding from their bady parents but one is a trader and I am dying to know who it is. As if that wasn't enough apparently the whole city is owned by the Pride so they have put out wanted posters on their own children and claimed they kidnapped Molly.

Whew that was the first one I can't wait to get the second may have to suck it up and purchase this weekend.... instead of waiting on the library. The thing that has me nervous about this series is the low ratings it gets as the series continues... maybe I should stick to the library versions.
